Ensure that the firestarter is run at boot up (still not talking about the
GUI), so run now the "iptables -L" again and hopefully you will get quite
a lot of output still, ot else the service was never started and you would
be without a "firewall".

Yes, the turning off the iptables service don't disable the usage of
iptables. The iptable service is to use to save the current iptable rules
at shutdown and then restore those at bootup. This gives the problem that
temoprary iptable rules will become permanent if you don't remember to
remove those.
