Firestarter don't generate any output when started to dmesg nor 
/var/log/messages, if you want it to log something then you need to do as 
Mike says.

ps won't show you any firestarter service activity, as it's a script that 
is run once (at boot up time), setting up a number of iptable rules. It's 
not a service like a daemon running in the background.

What does the error message say? Do you get somethign in your dmesg about 
this error, or in your /var/log/messages ?
