Is the print server "local" to the firestarter box? (On the same network?) I had similar problems, but the print server was on a different network segment via a VPN. What protocol is the print server using? (LPD, HP JetDirect, HTTP)? With the firewall down, can you use tcpdump to watch the TCP traffic to/from the print server to confirm the addresses and ports? If so, try adding appropriate entries in the user-pre file in firestarter to allow that traffic. Are you using NAT or MASQ? When the firewall comes up, these take effect. When it is down, they don't. If you are MASQ or NAT'ing internal IP addresses to a public IP, the traffic coming back from the print server could be mis-directed. If so, you would need to add an exception to the MASQ or NAT entry to skip that particular internal IP. Just some thoughts....
