But I just did some simple tests and failed to prove its usefulness. From a linux box I get a rapid response from dns if the host can't be found. And if the host is running but the filename is incorrect I also get an instaneous response. Response is slightly slower for a box that has a valid dns entry but is not running - approx 7 seconds.
