It's purpose is to support databases resident on remote mounted file systems. Surely you will agree that if several machines try to open the same database the database will get trashed. There are other ways to handle this situation, configuration files to force redirection and locks to prevent trashing the database, but this approach is defensible. That said, however, I don't think we want to retain WNet just for that feature. I'm content to let the first machine that can legitimately attach the database do so and let anyone else who tried to get an error.
