I don't think any performance comparisons have been done.  Differences in
overall performance of a DBMS would most likely be due to differences in
filesystem performance.  Out of the box, Linux typically outperforms
FreeBSD in filesystem access, but it does so at the cost of filesystem
instability.  FreeBSD softupdates is a nice balance between performance
and stability, but that's another matter entirely.

I'm not aware of any build problems on 4.1.  The error messages you got
would therefore be incredibly useful.
