[Firebird-net-provider] Connection pool bug

Hi *,

I found a bug in connection pool. I *don't* know the root cause. But
anyway I think the code there isn't "good" or "nice", so to speak. But
I currently have an application in front of me, that escalates the
problem, some memory leaks. I think I might go to rewrite the pooling
(I implemented one earlier this year for another provider) and test
it. Hopefully it will be simpler, faster and correct. BUT it might
(will) not have exactly same API/behavior as the old one (and I don't
wanna to try mimic it). So it will be huge breaking change if you rely
on something like that. Of course the major version number will be
incremented. And I hope I'll not introduce more bugs. ;)

Is there anybody against it?

I don't have any good test application. But we can let unit tests run
in multiple instances all over again. It will crash or not. Better
than nothing.

I  am  definitely  incapable of inventing sophisticated test suites by
myself, but I am always willing to help if I can.

I  have  some  spare  machines  running different Windows versions and
surely  won't  need  them for several days. So if you have a good idea
how  to  create  a  useful  "heavy  load test", I could set up a small
system  with  a server and 2 or 3 clients running these tests for some
days.

Hi *,

is here anybody who I'd like to put FirebirdClient into (long) test
under (preferably) some load?

I started work on async support and with that I'll also have to redo
all the lock-ing there. Because these are either wrong or not
necessary (and often both). But there's also a lot of magic happening
thanks to old [1] code that's executed under GC. And that's hard to
test.

I'd like to redesign it completely (and not only this, have you seen
i.e. connection pooling...), but until somebody give a few months of
time, it's just wish.

[1] Let's face it, the code is crappy. Redesign would be nice. But I
don't blame anybody, 5-10 years ago it was different story. .NET was
different (a lot) and we had different understanding of how it works
and should work (and how we should design code).

Any help to fix the designer would be nice, since the application is running now for a while, when you first told me about FirebirdClientFactory being wrong in the providers config and it should be FbServiceProviders, from that point on I only had problems with designer which resulted into application running problems on my modfications trying to fix the designer.

[Firebird-net-provider] firebird embedded on OS X with Mono

I am trying to embed firebird (the current version) with Mono on OS X for
development. After looking through what I can find I came up against this
error:

I tried to make a copy of security2.fdb and place it next to fbembed to no
avail, and removing User ID/Password gives me a different error that says
the connection string is either invalid or required arguments missing.

This is my current connection string.

And my current build directory layout.

So... another update from my side...
 
I have stoped the firebirdserver services, closed my visual studios and I uninstalled DDEX, and no processs was running that was related to any firebird product (no manager, no server, no visual studio or whats so ever), but I still couldnt uninstall the assembly from the GAC.
 
Then, I have deleted the FirebirdSql.Data.FirebirdClient with version 3.0.2.0 from the registry under
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Assemblies\Global
 
After this was gone I could successfully run the command gacutil -u FirebirdSql.Data.FirebirdClient, and according to the command gacutil -l FirebirdSql.Data.FirebirdClient no more were registered in GAC.
 
Now I registered the EF6 Provider into the GAC, and gacutil -l FirebirdSql.Data.FirebirdClient listed the version correctly as 3.2.0.0.
 
Than I reinstalled the DDEX.
 
Opened my visual studio.
 
Opened my EDMX file and it got displayed, but running the application still results to the error saying: 
An exception of type 'System.InvalidOperationException' occurred in System.Data.dll but was not handled in user code
Additional information: The requested .Net Framework Data Provider's implementaion does not have an Instance field of a System.Data.Common.DbProviderFactory derived type.
 
You propably gona say that I still have mismatch in my versions, but I am clueless at this point where it could be.

I have redownloaded the EF6 4.5 provider and registered it into GAC with the same result, also the dialogs to pick a database connection still doesnt hold the Firebird client. My current machine.config has the following entries:    <DbProviderFactories>

I have already put the EF6 provider into GAC but as I said 3-5 emails ago,
 
gacutil -u FirebirdSql.Data.FirebirdClient
 Tough I am still getting a message saying that the version 3.0.2.0 is still registered but cannot be uninstalled because its in use from some other application...
 (Maybe firebird server or Sql Manager Lite for Firebird ?!?)
 
So I guess that 3.0.2.0 is still in GAC and cannot be uninstalled is the root of my problem. 
Do you know a way to figure out what application is using the 3.0.2.0 version that cant be uninstalled threw the gacutil -u command?

The app is using EF5, so you have version mismatch.

You need to install provider into GAC (pre-EF6 or EF6 version) to make

Role "" (empty string) is not the same as no role. A potential solution 
would be for the provider not to send the role if it is empty.

Not sure if thats a known issue and needs some attention, but let me ask anyway.
I have it now running, atleast the code runs.

But I am facing problems with the designer.

There are 2 kinda connected problems with this.

First, when I have the following line in my machine.config

I can open the edmx, without problems but I cannot "Update Model from Database". When I try to do so I am getting the following:
An exception of Type 'System.ArgumentException' occurred while attempting to update from database. The exception message is: 'Unable to convert runtime connection string to its design-time equivalent. Connection string: character set=UTF8;initial catalog=C:\DB.FDB;data source=localhost;user id=SYSDBA;password=masterkey'.

Additional information: The requested .Net Framework Data Provider's implementation does not have an Instance field of a System.Data.Common.DbProviderFactory derived type.

This Additional Information also comes when I open the EDMX in xml format as an tooltip (mouseover).

So I thought, okay neither the designer nor the execution is running smoothly so change the machine.config back to FirebirdClientFactory, but I am getting the following when I do so:

I cannot open the edmx, when I double click the edmx I am getting the message
The operation could not be completed.

Running the same simple LINQ query from above works now without problems.

In both scenarios, I cannot add a new server (connect to database) in visual studio, the firebird isnt listed in this dialog (same with the Add New Item --> Ado .Net Entity Model when you have to pick a database and say new connection).

I there a way to have the designer work 100%, or do I need to wait for a new release?

So.....

After deinstalling the msi package again, checking the C:\windows\assembly once more and again seeing no firebird dll entry.
I tried the console command gacutil and voila there were a dll still registered, so I uninstalled the FirebirdSql assembly myself with 

gacutil -u FirebirdSql.Data.FirebirdClient
Tough I am still getting a message saying that the version 3.0.2.0 is still registered but cannot be uninstalled because its in use from some other application...
(Maybe firebird server or Sql Manager Lite for Firebird ?!?)

Its now finally  working, thanks for your patience. :D
