Right now I'm still using (with success) the 1.0 and can't see any reason to move to the 1.1 (except for C#Builder needs). Just my 2cents. Ciao, Alessandro Petrelli. |

Hello: > Comments are wellcome Huummmm ..... I'm thinking on stop 1.1 developement and center efforts on the 1.5 with the new GDS implementation, at this moment there are only two mayor issues in the code of the 1.5: 1. There are no documentation comments because i'm not sure if i'm going to mantain it in external files or not. 2. Implicit transaction are not implemented yet because i'm thinking on test the Autocommit mode of Firebird. Any comments ?? -- Best regards Carlos Guzmán Álvarez Vigo-Spain |

Hello: I'm finishing first stage of the reorganization of the GDS implementation for 1.5 version, the new GDS has the next files: GdsArray.cs GdsAsciiBlob.cs GdsAttachement.cs GdsAttachParams.cs GdsBinaryBlob.cs GdsBlob.cs GdsCharset.cs GdsCharsetCollection.cs GdsCodes.cs GdsDbAttachement.cs GdsDecodeType.cs GdsDpbBuffer.cs GdsEncodeType.cs GdsEpbBuffer.cs GdsError.cs GdsErrorCollection.cs GdsEvent.cs GdsEvtAttachement.cs GdsException.cs GdsExceptionHelper.cs GdsField.cs ( XSQLVAR.cs in 1.1 ) GdsInetReader.cs GdsInetWriter.cs GdsLayouts.cs GdsResponse.cs GdsRowDescription.cs ( XSQLDA.cs in 1.1 ) GdsSlice.cs GdsSpbBuffer.cs GdsStatement.cs GdsStatementState.cs GdsSvcAttachement.cs GdsTransaction.cs As a result of the reorganization next files are no more needed and i have deleted it: Blob.cs ( GdsBlob in 1.5 ) FbArray.cs ( GdsArray in 1.5 ) FbBlob.cs ( GdsBinaryBlob in 1.5 ) FbClob.cs ( GdsAsciiBlob in 1.5 ) FbField.cs FbMetaData.cs FbParameterBlock.cs FbResultSet.cs FbStatement.cs The size of the dll are: FirebirdSql.Data.Firebird.1.1.dll -> 276KB FirebirdSql.Data.Firebird.1.5.dll -> 244KB Now i'm trying to run all NUnit test with the 1.5. I am just trying to get a test of the .NET driver in the C#Builder personal trial... I have install the driver assemblies and can add a connection and command to a form. I can't seem to escape the fact that the property for commandtype has to be System.Data.CommandType.TableDirect or System.Data.CommandType.StoreProcedure or System.Data.CommandType.Text and all throw exceptions. What might be the correct commandType (and Builder seems to overwrite my code each time I try to change it - gotta work that out too :-) Alan |

Hello: After some time thinking on it i have decided to rewrite the GDS implementation, i decide this after see the result of the implementation of the protocol of a Data Provider for other RDBMS i have been developed since past month, i think that with the rewrite the GDS will more clear an easy of mantain and i expect faster too. The new GDS implementation will be included in 1.5 version ( i'm starting to work in it yet ), i'm planning to add for this version classes for metadata extraction, that will be accessed from a GetDbSchema method of FbConnection ( like for OleDb provider ) and some design time support for VS.NET ( non decided yet but i think this will be interesting ), but main objective is to rewrite the GDS implementation. This rewrite will affect only to internal classes, ADO.NET classes will expose the same members as in version 1.1. With this in mind the next version of the 1.1 branch will be Beta 1 and developement will be feature freeze and only bug fixes will accepted for this, probably there will be one more beta version and at least 3 release candidates. Comments are welcome !! :D -- Best regards Carlos Guzmán Álvarez Vigo-Spain |

Hello: > in any case i would try to have it finished as soon as possible. Latest version of the script in the CVS it's working for me now, you need to configure the config file of nant ( in the bin directory of nant installation ) for use the mono-0.25 release, add mono lib directory to the path, open a msdos console, go to the net-provider directory, execute monobasepath.bat file and type: nant -f:firebirdnetprovider_mono.build.win32 -- Best regards Carlos Guzmán Álvarez Vigo-Spain |

I have added to the CVS in the branch of the 1.1 version sources, aNant script for Mono in Windows but it's not finished yet. > Why do make the compiled Provider only available as an Installer requiring > MSFT .NET? Because the installer used works only with MS .NET :) and because Mono has no stable version, when it reaches version 1.0 i will provide binary versions for both windows and linux, until that there are a makefile for built the sources in Linux with mono and now there are a Nant script for mono in Windows, as i tell before it's not finished yet it's giving me a strange problem, if you can test it and tell to me if it works for you it would be great!! in any case i would try to have it finished as soon as possible. -- Best regards Carlos Guzmán Álvarez Vigo-Spain |

Hi Carlos, All, Thanks for your advice: > > Is Cygwin also needed to use FirebirdNETProvider on Mono/Win32? > > No, you can use Nant (nant.sourceforge.net), you only need to modify the > build file for use mono ( mcs ) instead of csc. I downloaded latest Nant from nant.sourceforge.net but without further mangling it seems to require MSFT .NET. Also the Nant chapter of the Mono tutorial is still empty. So, I (once again) kindly request: Can anybody make a compiled Firebird NetProvider available? I really just wanted to experiment with the quickstart example in the Mono tutorial and find it rather unnerving that I have to reconstruct an entire tool chain. Why do make the compiled Provider only available as an Installer requiring MSFT .NET? While I can't quite answer your precise question, I am developing applications for both MS SQL and Firebird side by side in C++ with managed extensions, where objects provide an abstraction between application code and the ADO.NET interface for either engine (with provisions for ODBC providers). What I've found so far is that while there are specific differences in the server or provider, Firebird and the FB provider are generally very similar in features, it's just the details that vary slightly. For example, the FB provider is more particular about requiring transactions than Sql provider, the data type enumerations are different, and the collection of meta-data is slightly different between the servers. It's my opinion that for any situation where even slight differences exist, object abstraction is indicated (even though it seems that ADO.NET is an abstaction, it's not a consistent abstraction and therefore fails to provide application code a single interface). __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
