Hi Carlos, After making the change to the sp all worked well. Thank you for pointing out that error. I had IB EXPERT build the procedure and did not spot the difference in BLOB SUB_TYPE. cheers martin |

Hi, I have now tried the C# code below using the cast that was provided. I still get an exception of "Specified cast is not valid." the C# code that I have used is shown below. The stored procedure that I am using is shown below also. There is definatly a record comming back. at least if I use a fbdatareader and loop then the loop only ueses a single record. I am not sure how to get the value back from a data reader. It seems strange that the cast works for you and not me I am using RC2. Thanks again for any advice. cheers martin. try { Context.Trace.Warn("Page_Load","Entered function"); FirebirdSql.Data.Firebird.FbConnection objConn = new FirebirdSql.Data.Firebird.FbConnection(); FirebirdSql.Data.Firebird.FbCommand objCMD = new FirebirdSql.Data.Firebird.FbCommand(); objConn.ConnectionString = "Database=C:\\Inetpub\\wwwroot\\nz\\_database\\RESTOREDB.GDB;User=SYSDBA;Pas sword=masterkey;Dialect=3;Server=localhost;Pooling=false;"; objConn.Open(); objCMD.Connection = objConn; Context.Trace.Write("Page_Load","connection is open"); objCMD.CommandText = "SP_EE_GET_GROUP_DESCRIPTION"; objCMD.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure; FirebirdSql.Data.Firebird.FbParameter P1 = new FirebirdSql.Data.Firebird.FbParameter(); P1.Direction = ParameterDirection.Input; P1 = objCMD.Parameters.Add("@ID", 87); FirebirdSql.Data.Firebird.FbDataReader dr; dr = objCMD.ExecuteReader(); string value = (string)objCMD.ExecuteScalar(); objConn.Close(); Context.Trace.Warn("Page_Load","Exited function"); } catch (Exception ex) { Context.Trace.Warn("Excepetion thrown"); Context.Trace.Write(ex.Message); } store procedure text CREATE PROCEDURE SP_EE_GET_GROUP_DESCRIPTION ( ID INTEGER) RETURNS ( DISPLAY_DESCRIPTION BLOB SUB_TYPE 0 SEGMENT SIZE 80) AS BEGIN FOR SELECT EE_SP_NAME.DISPLAY_DESCRIPTION FROM EE_SP_SCHEDULE INNER JOIN EE_SP_NAME ON (EE_SP_SCHEDULE.EE_SP_NAME_ID = EE_SP_NAME.ID) WHERE ( (EE_SP_SCHEDULE.ID = :ID) ) INTO :DISPLAY_DESCRIPTION DO BEGIN SUSPEND; END END ""Martin"" <mc...@we...> wrote in message news:bu79g2$38v$1...@ne...... > Hi, > > I am using .net provider 1.5 RC2. > I am using vb.net code. Hi, I am using .net provider 1.5 RC2. I am using vb.net code. The line that is throwing the exception is strDesciption = CType(objCMD.ExecuteScalar(), String) and the exception description is Cast from type 'Byte()' to type 'String' is not valid. I have checked that a record is being broght back. Perhaps I have the cast syntax wrong... The full code that I am using is below. If I comment the cat out and just use objCMD.ExecuteScalar() then all works fine. I am executing a stored procedure. and the full code that I am using is below for reference. cheers martin. Hello: > BLOB SUB_TYPE 1 SEGMENT SIZE 80 CHARACTER SET NONE It's correct, which version of the .NET Data Provider are you using ?? I have tested this with 1.5, and runs fine: FbConnection connection = new FbConnection(connectionString); connection.Open(); string sql = "select clob_field from test where int_field = 1"; FbCommand command = new FbCommand(sql, connection); string value = (string)command.ExecuteScalar(); connection.Close(); -- Best regards Carlos Guzmán Álvarez Vigo-Spain |

Thanks for that, I am a little confusesd. I'm not sure what the sub type has to do with it. Does this mean that I can retrive the data directly if it has a subtype of text?? I have never used the "Encoding" classes before. Do these classes belong to .net framework or firebirdsql. I would appreciate knowing the full namespace of the classes to use then I can start looking through the documentation. Any pointers on articles that may be helpful in doing such a thing is appreciated (it is totally new to me.) just for back ground this is the create statement for my table CREATE TABLE EE_SP_NAME ( ID PK_ID NOT NULL, PROCEDURE_NAME VC80 NOT NULL, DISPLAY_TEXT VC80 NOT NULL, DISPLAY_DESCRIPTION BLOB_TEXT_DATA NOT NULL, CREATED TIMESTAMP_NOW NOT NULL ); the definition of the blob text domain is BLOB SUB_TYPE 1 SEGMENT SIZE 80 CHARACTER SET NONE cheers martin "Carlos Guzmán Álvarez" <car...@te...> wrote in message news:400...@te...... > Hello: > > > I am retrieving a BLOB field from a firebird db via .net provider 1.5 > > > > I am using ExecuteScalar() to get the first single result from execution of > > the stored procudure I am trying to retrieve the value like so > > It's a blob field with subtype text ?? if not the provider will return > an array of bytes and you will need to convert it to an string using the > Encoding classes. > > > > -- > Best regards > > Carlos Guzmán Álvarez > Vigo-Spain > > > ------------------------------------------------------- > The SF.Net email is sponsored by EclipseCon 2004 > Premiere Conference on Open Tools Development and Integration > See the breadth of Eclipse activity. Hi, I am retrieving a BLOB field from a firebird db via .net provider 1.5 I am using ExecuteScalar() to get the first single result from execution of the stored procudure I am trying to retrieve the value like so Dim strDesciption As Byte strDesciption = objCMD.ExecuteScalar() <--- this line throws an exception.. I am then trying to put the result into a string -- but execution does not get this far so don't know if it is correct Return strDesciption.ToString() I am getting a "System.InvalidCastException" (produced by the ExecuteScalar() line) message "Cast from type 'Byte()' to type 'Byte' is not valid." I would appreciate any advice on how to avoid this error and be able to return the string from the blob field my dot net code as a string many thanks in advance. martin. |

Hello, I don't know if this is the right place to report this kind of problem.... Installation problem. I'm trying to install Fb client on a sistem with win98 (not win98 SE). instclient.exe generate an error in module msvcrt.dll, but in win98 SE not. So I replace msvcrt.dll version from win98 with win98SE and the problem disappear. It seems that instclient.exe from the FB 1.5 RC8 will not work with msvcrt.dll version 5.00.7128 but with msvcrt.dll ver 6.10.9359.0 will work well. I spent 2 days to find what is the probleme why my program don't find the gds32.dll on a computer with win98 ... at that time I used FB 1.5 CR7. If I use the "stub" version of gds32.dll my prog don't start(runtime error 217 ar xxxx), if I rename fbclient.dll in gds32.dll then library can't be loaded...(err mesage is "gds32.dll not found"- it was in the right place all the time). I hope this bug was not reported until now, and other users will know how to deal that type of problem. Corneliu T. |

Hello: > And must I run the fbserver.exe when I try 2 access > the database? Or just don't need that anymore? Sorry i left this without answer in my previous email You need to download the Firebird Embedded Server: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/firebird/Firebird-1.5.0.4201_RC8_embed_win32.zip?download Using ServerType=1 in the connection string the provider will use the fbembed.dll (you need to have it in the path), if you use ServerType=0 the provider will try to work against a Super or Classic Server installation. -- Best regards Carlos Guzmán álvarez Vigo-Spain |

That is it? My current connection string looks like this "User=SYSDBA;Password=maserkey;Dialect=3;Server=localhost;Pooling=False;"; but server=localhost in it what must I do with that?? And must I run the fbserver.exe when I try 2 access the database? Or just don't need that anymore? hello, i have got the newest firebird (from the sf website) and compiled etc etc. I download .netprovider 1.6 and now i wanna connect 2 a database with .netprovider 1.6. There is no new manual right available for 1.6 so that is way i'm asking it hehe. Can somebody show me some source of connection string retrieving data from a embedded firebird server. i'm coding in C# Thx! Sander |

Hello: > Is it correct that the embedded server only accepts one connection? > How will this work with .NET Provider connection pooling? I have done a little test on this, opening 10 connections without problem, the code (i think it's correct, the connection string is always the same): FbConnection[] connections = new FbConnection[10]; for (int i = 0; i < connections.Length; i++) { connections[i] = new FbConnection(connectionString); connections[i].Open(); } for (int i = 0; i < connections.Length; i++) { connections[i].Close(); } -- Best regards Carlos Guzmán Álvarez Vigo-Spain |

Is it correct that the embedded server only accepts one connection? How will this work with .NET Provider connection pooling? Regards Thomas |

Hello: Abel Eduardo Pereira (from Portugal) has joined to the Firebird .NET Data Provider team. His first contribution is an excellent SQL Script parser and executor that will replace the actual FbScript class in the 1.6 sources (Sources are in the CVS yet). -- Best Regards Carlos Guzmán álvarez Vigo-Spain |

Hi, I have found that if I run at least 1 call to the database without the "pooling=false" addition to the connection string then locking of the .gdb file will occur and I will not be able to delete the file after running my dot net code. however as soon as I chage the connection string in web.config to include the "pooling=false" in the connection string and run a query, agaist the previously locked file, then the connection pool seems to be cleared. I not sure if this is because the dot.net project has been recompiled becasue of the change to web.config or not. anyway, my problem is solved, but if you do any "cleanPool" functionality to "fbConnection" then I for one would be interested in using it. cheers martin. Huummm you can try to create a static method in FbConnection, called for example CleanPool, for clean all the connections in the pool, if there are more people interested on this i can make it in the provider sources :), i can try to review too if there are anything arround this in the .NET Framework 1.1 and 1.2 documentation. > This situation could arise if say a problem arose on my production site and > I wanted to shut my production site down for a while and copy the production > database to my development server, Firstly stoping the firebird service on > the production server. Huummm if you want to do backups you can do that without make a shutdown of the server, but i don't know if you mean this type of maintenance tasks :) -- Best regards Carlos Guzmán Álvarez Vigo-Spain |

Hi Carlos, This has worked brilliantly, I am now able to delete the file after running my dot net code. Thank you. This particular problem has brought up the issue of the benefits of using connection pooling on a firebird db. If say I had a busy website using a firebird db as a back end, that was using connection pooling and was visited by a fair amont of people. Then supposing I needed to take the website down for a short period of time, say for routine maintenance, I would have a whole pile of open connections in my database. I guess that I would need to close the connections gracefully, I'm not sure how I would do this. This situation could arise if say a problem arose on my production site and I wanted to shut my production site down for a while and copy the production database to my development server, Firstly stoping the firebird service on the production server. Stopping the service would report "Overlapping I/O operation." anyway, I know the above is not a .net question and probably hightlights my limited understanding of firebird, it's just got me wondering, that all. Thanks agian for helping me out. cheers martin.
