Hi all, I have a look at the current setup in combination with the latest Java SDK and Docbook on the weekend. Regards, Tilo |

Hi, > If you need docs, better get the free Borland docs and also check > out various free and paid docs at www.ibphoenix.com To be more precise: you'll find the free BorDocs _and_ the free Firebird Quick Start Guide _and_ lots of other stuff at: http://www.ibphoenix.com/main.nfs?a=ibphoenix&page=ibp_download Grtz, PV |

Hi Adriano, First of all: if you wanted to build the doc to use it as a doc, you'd better not. At this moment, it's just an XML conversion of the first 60 or so pages from Borland's Data Definition Guide (which we may have to drop due to copyright issues). If you need docs, better get the free Borland docs and also check out various free and paid docs at www.ibphoenix.com If you wanted to build it because you might be interested in helping, please continue reading. Otherwise, don't bother :-) > The script 'build defaulthtml' stops complaining > > defaulthtml: > Building html documentation. Please wait ... > [style] Transforming into C:\work\diano\dev\fb- > docs\manual\dist\docs\default > html > > BUILD FAILED > > C:\work\diano\dev\fb-docs\manual\src\build\build.xml:69: > java.lang.NoSuchMethodError: > org.apache.xalan.xslt.Process.getDefaultLiaison()Ljava/lang/String; I have the same problem building defaulthtml. Fails with same error & same stack trace on Win2k and Linux. I have installed Java2 just recently, version 1.4.1_01. Maybe an older Java2 is needed, or updated ant classes. One thing that strikes me in build.bat and build.sh is the line FIREBIRD_HOME=../../../client/java/src/ because it points OUTSIDE OF the manual tree. There is currently no module "client" in the firebird repository. There _is_ a "client-java" with a subdir "src". So I checked that out, changed the above line a bit, ran the script again... zilch. Oh well, I suppose one can always try :-) I asked Tilo about this because I think he has this working. No answer yet but I guess it won't take long. I'm completely new to DocBook. At this very moment I am reading the DocBook Guide at http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/docbook/ to learn more about it and maybe sort things out myself in case Tilo hasn't the answer. If I find a remedy I'll post a followup here. Greetings, Paul Vinkenoog |

I recently CVSed the manual module and got stuck with a problem that I am not sure how to solve. The script 'build defaulthtml' stops complaining defaulthtml: Building html documentation. Please wait ... [style] Transforming into C:\work\diano\dev\fb- docs\manual\dist\docs\default html BUILD FAILED C:\work\diano\dev\fb-docs\manual\src\build\build.xml:69: java.lang.NoSuchMethodError: org.apache.xalan.xslt.Process.getDefaultLiaison()Ljava/lang/String; java.lang.NoSuchMethodError: org.apache.xalan.xslt.Process.getDefaultLiaison()Ljava/lang/String; It probably has to do with my Java installation. So I ask: what special arrangements I need to do if I am using J2SDK 1.4.1_01 in a Windows 2000 machine? I found that it can be because the xalan transformer for building the Firebird docs is of a different version of my JRE, and maybe it is being called rather than the one of the manual directory. But how do I work it out? Thanks for any help. Adriano Rodrigues Ferreira |

Hi Paul, hmm it seems my first reply did not get to the list, so here we go again: <<< I've read some archived postings at sourceforge.net, and I now understand you stopped converting because of the copyright issue. >>> Yes it's a pity! <<< Still would like to know if you or anyone else has ever contacted Borland about this and if so, what the outcome was. >>> I've mailed them at int...@bo... but never got an answer. Maybe we should try again, since IB7 is out and so it's not a big deal for them to give us the permission to use the "old" IB6 beta docs. What do you think? Regards, Tilo |

Hello Tilo, or anybody else who knows about this, The Firebird Documentation Project, afaict, consists of converting the Borland docs to XML. So I always assumed that these docs are part of the Open Source license, and we can use them to base future Firebird docs on. But now the question has arisen (on the mailing list of the Firebird SQL Foundation) whether we can really legally do this. Helen Borrie told you might have contacted Borland about this, and maybe obtained permission. I'd like to help converting some of the docs, but I want to be sure my time isn't wasted. Hope you can clear things up. Greetings, Paul Vinkenoog |

Nested transactions is where a new transaction can be started from within another transaction, i.e. start a transaction from within a stored procedure (which is, itself inside a transaction, of course). >(I believe the book where it said >'PostgreSQL does not handle embedded transactions' was "Postgresql: >Developer's Handbook" by Geschwinde, Schoenig, and Schonig.) Maybe I >should say "simultaneous"? If I've used the term incorrectly, sorry. >Please let me know what I should call it. If PGSQL won't let you start another transaction before committing or rolling back the current transactions, then it doesn't support multiple concurrent transactions. I don't think this is quite right, either. Could it be that this restriction applies where the transactions in question have their isolation level attribute set to one which makes them serialized? (Comparable to Fb's Consistency isolation...) >Whatever it's called (and please correct me), it was the brick wall I hit >when I first tried porting from Oracle to PostgreSQL. In PostgreSQL, >committing any transaction closes all transactions. Odd. >In the embedded SQL I >just I just ported, there are many instances where I run one or more named >transactions inside another--or, at least, while another one is executing. Transactions (in both Fb and Oracle) run in isolation from one another. The isolation level determines how isolated one transaction will be from any others. Transaction isolation is the mechanism by which concurrent transactions can run each inside its own view of the database state, without compromising or being compromised by the effects of other transactions that started before it or that start after it. Oracle has some kind of priority system for "who wins" when multiple transactions commit work on rows that other transactions are still working on. If I recall correctly, this depends on the style of lock granted to the transaction. With Fb, the first to commit wins, as long as the current state of the row bookkeeping indicates it can. (This needs a lot more explanation to understand: it's pretty lengthy and OT for here. You can pick up docs on the IBPhoenix and IBObjects sites that explain the multi-generational bookkeeping). >I have tested cases of five and more transactions running at the same >time with Firebird. This was not possible with PostgreSQL because the >first commit/rollback closed down everything. Mmm, if you're going back there, it would be worthwhile finding out whether PG transactions are serialized by default, for some reason... Helen |

PostgreSQL docs seems to call it nested when you start another transaction before committing or rolling back the current transactions. (I believe the book where it said 'PostgreSQL does not handle embedded transactions' was "Postgresql: Developer's Handbook" by Geschwinde, Schoenig, and Schonig.) Maybe I should say "simultaneous"? If I've used the term incorrectly, sorry. Please let me know what I should call it. Whatever it's called (and please correct me), it was the brick wall I hit when I first tried porting from Oracle to PostgreSQL. In PostgreSQL, committing any transaction closes all transactions. In the embedded SQL I just I just ported, there are many instances where I run one or more named transactions inside another--or, at least, while another one is executing. For example, in the .e file that accesses the database, I have two functions. The first opens a cursor into a table and fetches record. The second closes it. (Since we use other databases, I also have Oracle *.pc, Sybase *.cp, and Informix *.ep version of this, each tailored to their own peculiar embedded SQL implementation.) ----------------- .e file ---------------------- static XSQLDA *out_sqlda; /* XSQLDA struct for all output params */ static isc_tr_handle ent_trans; /* transaction for get_dbrec_ent() */ int entflag = FALSE; ... int get_dbrec_ent( dbrec r ) { EXEC SQL BEGIN DECLARE SECTION; char thesql[1024]; EXEC SQL END DECLARE SECTION; EXEC SQL WHENEVER SQLERROR GO TO e_error; EXEC SQL WHENEVER NOT FOUND GO TO e_notfound; if ( entflag == FALSE ) { memset( thesql, 0, sizeof thesql ); strcpy( thesql, "SELECT " ); ... /* allocate XSQLDA */ ent_trans = (isc_tr_handle) NULL; EXEC SQL SET TRANSACTION NAME ent_trans READ ONLY; EXEC SQL PREPARE TRANSACTION ent_trans statement FROM :thesql; EXEC SQL DESCRIBE OUTPUT statement INTO SQL DESCRIPTOR out_sqlda; ... /* allocate XSQVARS */ EXEC SQL DECLARE scrnc CURSOR FOR statement; EXEC SQL OPEN TRANSACTION ent_trans cursor; entflag = TRUE; } EXEC SQL FETCH cursor USING SQL DESCRIPTOR out_sqlda; ... /* convert to my dbrec structure */ return 0; e_notfound: EXEC SQL WHENEVER NOT FOUND CONTINUE; return E_NOREC; e_error: EXEC SQL WHENEVER SQLERROR CONTINUE; return DB_ERROR; } void end_o_dbrec_ent() { entflag = FALSE; EXEC SQL CLOSE cursor; ... /* free XSQLVARS and XSQLDA */ /* commit ent_trans transaction */ } ----------------- .e file ---------------------- Now in my *.c file, I access get_dbrec_ent() in a loop. This loop may well call funtions in other *.e files, functions which create, execute, and commit/rollbacktheir own transactions. while( get_dbrec_ent( &mydbrec ) == 0 ) { ... } end_o_dbrec_ent(); I have tested cases of five and more transactions running at the same time with Firebird. This was not possible with PostgreSQL because the first commit/rollback closed down everything. -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Thad Humphries "...no religious test shall ever be required Web Development Manager as a qualification to any office or public Phone: 540/675-3015, x225 trust under the United States." -Article VI |
