Okay, I may be getting closer the problem. Right after running "fink configure" I ran "fink list" from the command line and got this: << Reading package info... Fink has detected that your package cache is out of date and needs an update, but does not have privileges to modify it. Please re-run fink as root, for example with a "fink index" command. Information about 2051 packages read in 56 seconds. >> Instead of running "fink index" I launched FinkCommander and all the packages were listed. I quit FinkCommander, ran "fink index" followed by "fink list" on the command line and didn't get the package cache error. Once again I launched FinkCommander and only the installed, archived and virtual packages--and no Stable/Unstable information and all Category set to unknown. I tried this several times and every time, running "fink configure" would give me a full FinkCommander table at the expense of getting a package cache error and when a command that needs to be run as root (and as far as I know will run the "fink index" command) the FinkCommander table shrinks to the above mentioned state. So--what is the package cache and what is going on? My problems may be related to Perl 5.8.0, but the other system seems to work fine except when I run a few commands in a specific order as I posted earlier. The problem may be with Storable.pm, though I believe that I rebuilt that module so it runs properly with 5.8.0. --Dan |
