Apparently, binary distribution support was supposed to work again in Fink 0.36.3.1, but it doesn't seem to be the case. When running the "./bootstrap" script to install Fink, I get the following message:

"Fink does not yet support an official set of binary packages for your current
distribution.

=> Setting UseBinaryDist to 'false'"

My distribution is 10.9 on x86_64, and judging from the page "http://bindist.finkproject.org/10.9/", binary packages should be available. Also, according to http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/message.php?msg_id=31685117, bindist support was supposed to have been fixed, but apparently it isn't.

    What was fixed was usage of any binary distribution on x86_64. What was not implemented was automatic addition of a repository, since at that time the binary distributions weren't yet set up.

    You should be able to fix this manually by adding

    deb http://bindist.finkmirrors.net/10.9 stable main

    to your /sw/etc/apt/sources.list , and then using "sudo apt-get update".

      Judging from the e-mail to which I linked, I'm pretty sure that a binary distribution for 10.9 was available before the release of 0.36.3. The e-mail in question dates from November 25, while Fink 0.36.3 was released on December 26.

        Oh, that's right. I misremembered.

        Anyway, even though fink doesn't set this up automatically right now, there are instructions posted at http://bindist.finkmirrors.net
