I'm using 2x AudioFire 12s and I think 256 or 512 was the lowest I could run them, but they were stable. If the 4 is anything like the 12, FFADO only works with the oldest firmware, ALSA works with the newer firmwares. Not sure if ALSA is causing your problem or your buffer size, but I'm guessing it's the buffer size. Although if I could run these things at a 64 buffer, that'd be something else.
