AFAICT those changes after r2167, apart from some unrelated RME driver updates, 1. have an effect only if a post-2.0.9 libraw1394 is present at runtime (otherwise the old code paths are still taken), 2. only affect how the audio streaming use the system clock and schedule pauses. Your issue on the other hand seemed to be with initial device probing, not with the streaming system. So I think it is more likely that either the Saffire or the FireWire controller acted up and wanted a power reset --- more likely the Saffire. There has been a series of DICE or Saffire PRO 24/40 related changes before this; those changes are still present in current svn though as they were in r2166.
