There need to be kernel messages (a) from when your FireWire controller is initialized by the PCI and IEEE 1394 kernel subsystems, (b) when the audio device is plugged in/ switched on and probed by the IEEE 1394 kernel subsystem. Watch out for messages that are prefixed by 1394 or firewire.
