I had this problem many many time but for me it is solved.. i own a FA 101 and 
it works fine with KXStudio (Ubuntu 10.04)
I belong to audio video and disk but this last is yet a mistery... maybe use 
command with "usermod"..

Finally what i'm doing for Edirol FA 101 working: in a console
 
sudo chmod 777 /dev/raw1394
		
Some uses "sudo chmod 666 /dev/raw1394"

-sometimes i logged as root in that console when it says i'm not in sudoers 
file and type this command.

Some says that it's dangerous to have access to disk but how to do in other 
way?

.... But i'm not so experienced to understand all that.. You know the goal 
finally is to play music and record, no?!
