What are the main benefits for upgrading to 1.2.2? I am currently evaluating this package for work and I have installed 1.2 Is there an easy way to upgrade the 1.2.2 into the 1.2 area?

Main benefits are the 2 extra reports, particularly the Request Search. There are also a few bug-fixes. If you are interested in localising the text for a different language or just to change the terminology then 1.2.2 is much better for that.
Easy way to upgrade:
1) apply functions.sql from f2w-psql-1.2.2.tgz to your existing database - it's needed for some of the 1.2.2 reports.
2) import the new folder (f2w-1.2.2)
3) copy and paste your acl_users and any other local changes (e.g. style sheets in the style folder, f2w_mail setup) into the new version.
At this point, both folders should work, and act as separate views of the same back-end database.
4) When you are happy that the new version works the way you want, rename or move the old one out of the way and rename the new one as its replacement. Then if you've forgotten anything you can always get it back from the old one.
5) Delete f2w_db from the old version so you don't have an extra postgres connection you don't need for anything.
6) If you've added anything cool to the basic package and you want to share it with the world, you can post about it on the developer forum, or even join the project - you will be welcome.
