After following Exponent for two years, (lately just popping in to see wether something is hapening) I am afraid it's dead.
Sorry to say because I saw some great potential in it. Well, time to move on I guess.
Am I wrong? Am I a pessimist? Please proof me wrong...

I hope you are wrong. We'll be meeting on IRC tomorrow (at an uncertain time as of yet) to discuss what's next. I believe in it, and the people behind it. Life happens outside of development though. Patience is key.

It hasn't been talked about much here on SF, but if you visit the exponentcms.org website you will find that the project is very much alive. Unfortunately, most of the dev team are busy working on the code, so you don't see them often here at the moment.
Overview: Exponent is looking very stable now for a 0.96.5 release - RC5 will be available soon and it looks good. This release is mainly a clean sweep of the existing code core of exponent, bugfixing compatability issues with some small changes and improvements.
There are lots of great ideas for the future, and they are coming and should please many, but the team has been disciplined enough to ensure that the existing code is strong and clean. This stage has been more about reviewing all existing code, regrouping, and committing a clean build.
Next step may well be a total overhaul of the exponent core code to allow secure modular extensibility and incorporate significant advances across the board.
So please check out the 0.96.5-RC5 release when it comes out (any day now).
