I went and looked at the RemoteResourceSet and RemoteXMLResource (along with AbstractResource). I can tell the ResourceSet is just an Arraylist of Resource elements but still uncertain if the 'getResource(i)' is going back to the db when I go through the set. The code looks like the ArrayList of Resource objects is all returned from the eXist db and the getResource(i) DOES NOT go back to the db hence everything is in the ArrayList all Resource objects. But be good if one of the eXist experts can confirm that.
