Ok, sorry about that...I didn't mean to insinuate something was wrong with
the eXist war file specifically, I am just trying to narrow this problem
down a bit.  I am testing my XSLT with both eXist and the Xalan-Java engine
in jEdit, both of which return the same error.  However, I just now tried
using a local reference to an xml file like fn:doc('second_doc.xml') and it
worked, both with eXist and the jEdit!  So this is leading me to believe
that there is something about HTTP or REST that Xalan's doc function doesn't
like...

Am I way off base here or could I be narrowing this down any?
