#22 evms not creating device nodes?

I think the problem is more complicated than that.
I asked for help on the gentoo linux forums, but
received none. I think that my question is a little
too shotgun-style for the novice user; unfortunately, I
don't know which information is the most relevant to
the person trying to help me, and I don't have a firm
enough grasp on the problem to have narrowed down what
the problem is (despite spending long hours trying to
get it to work). Please see the complete question (read

I appreciate very, very deeply any help you may be able
to provide. I'll give as much detail as I can think of
so you'll have all the facts, and to save time.
First I'll say I think I've done due dilligence to
solve the problem myself: I've looked at every thread
in the forums that mentions evms since Jan. 2002
(including the evms mini-howto and gentoo lvm2 install
guide), and googled, too. I came across a few issues
that looked similar in the evms forums, but none that
were close
enough or offered solutions that worked.
I have no devices show up under /dev/evms. Only:
/dev/evms/dm
/dev/evms/dm/control
/dev/evms/.nodes
/dev/evms/.nodes/hda
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ not sure what that last one (hda)
actually means specifically. cat'ing it indicates that
it is, in fact, a raw device. But other posts and doc
uments don't mention a .nodes directory tree iirc.
evmsn, the ncurses interface to evms2, was able to do a
few functions, but now I can't save any more changes:
every time I try to "quit and save", it gives errors:
"Save failed. No such device"
and /var/log/evms-daemon.log has no errors -- only
startup stop errors. /var/log/evms-engine.log has lots
of errors from when I started evmsn (which apparently sta
rts the evms engine and also notices the changes that I
made before with evmsn, but was unable to save):

I've got one drive, "hda", which shows up as /dev/hda
-> /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/disc
It is partitioned using fdisk to have /dev/hda1 (ext3)
= /boot , /dev/hda2 (reiserfs) = / , /dev/hda3 (swapfs)
, and a fourth partition ("segment") was apparently c
reated using evmsn (the ncurses interface to evms2) at
/dev/hda4 using the DosSegMg.
So, find /dev |grep hda yields:

/dev/hda2
/dev/hda3
/dev/hda4
and ls -la /dev |grep hda shows that:

I've run vgscan over the course of my trouble-shooting,
so the evmsn-created volumes, "lvmreg1" (lvm2 region)
and "lvmreg2" (snapshot region that points at lvmreg1)
, were identified by lvm2. ls -laR /dev/lvmcont1 (which
is the name of the lvm container I created in /dev/hda
following the official evms howto) shows that:
lvmreg1 -> /dev/mapper/lvmcont1-lvmreg1
lvmreg2 -> /dev/mapper/lvmcont1-lvmreg2
and ls -laR /dev/mapper shows that there are (not
sym-links):

lvmcont1-lvmreg1
lvmcont1-lvmreg2
The error at boot-up that seems to indicate the core
problem comes when evms2 is loading in when entering
the default runlevel (3), from (I think) devfsd, though re
startingloading evms2 later does not produce the same
error message:
twice the error:

I'm not sure if it's a problem with devfs(d) or evms,
given the "unlink" devfs(d?) init message I provided above.
Or, maybe it's some kind of conflict between evms2 and
lvm2? Notably, init loads evms2 before it loads lvm2.
I've been trying for weeks with
gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.7-r4, r6, r11, and r12, with no
luck, to get /dev/evms/hda or any actual volumes to
show up under evms., with
no luck.

I've got evms (evms2, I assume, as the original evms is
deprecated; the help in menuconfig doesn't offer any
specific info), LVM2, D-M, and md support compiled stat
ically into the kernel. (All the examples use evms2 as
a module, but the overhead of using it as a module
seems unnecessary,) Raid 0, 1, and 5 support are kernel mo
dules. Whether the raid modules are loaded or not does
not affect the outcome.
the lvm2 user-land utilities and evms utilities are at
the latest versions: 2.00.08 and 2.3.4-r1,
respectively. The lvm2 ebuild compiled just fine with
my kernel,
despite what another post in the forums from July
indicated: that lvm2 will not compile at all with 2.6.7
kernel headers.
I'm not sure if it's a problem with devfs(d) or evms,
given the "unlink" devfs(d?) init message I provided above.
My /etc/evms.conf is all default settings (i.e. it
scans /dev looking for "disc" devices)
I've deleted all my evmsn-created containers and
started over several times, following the various evms
how-to's step-by-step -- it's definitely a problem with evm
s, not the container configuration I want to make; even
creating.
So, evms won't start because it's remembering some
changes I tried to commit before. (/dev/hda4 should
actually be /dev/evms/evmsvol1 , as shown in evmsn.)
evmsn also says that hda1 through hda3 should be in
/dev/evms/ , or something. From the evmsn:

Holy cow, all the research I did, and I missed a FAQ. Or
maybe I was too tired at the time. Thank you very, very
much for pointing me in the right direction. (side note:
it's a bummer to me that evms is (apparently, apart from a
backwards patch) an all-or-nothing deal on a per-disk basis.)
I may or may not go evms all-the-way -- will have to think
about it. I'll follow up on my gentoo forums thread.

EVMS is not an all or nothing deal. So you can safely have a
non-evms volume that is treated like a compatibility volume
by evms (i.e. a regular / or /boot partition) and you just
have to mount it using the evms device name. also you will
need to use the evms initrd to boot. also make sure you are
not using udev, evms and udev are not good at working
together in my experience.

... Now, I've added a second drive (hdc) and used evmsn to set up basic segments, containers and volumes as per the evms guide.
But trying to start evms (/etc/init.d/evms start in gentoo) fails because it is still trying to commit the hda changes( but failing).
HDA is my main drive, does not use evms, and I don't want hda to use evms. No device nodes exist for hda in /dev/evms . I tried several combinations of having hda (hda1 ...hda4) in the exclude list in /etc/evms.conf, as well as explicitly including *only* hdc and hdc? (if that matters) in the same file.
No luck. How do I make evms realize that it doesn't get to muck with my other drive(s), after it's already got it in its head that it should be managing them?

Make sure you are specifying the include and exclude lists
in the correct section of the EVMS config file. There are
two appropriate sections: legacy_devices for 2.4 kernels,
and sysfs_devices for 2.6 kernels. If you're running 2.6,
make sure you're using the appropriate section of the EVMS
config file.
There is no way to leave sysfs out of the kernel. It is
always built in. And I'm not aware of any incompatibilities
between EVMS and udev.

When trying to start the evms services (via gentoo's
/etc/init.d/evms start) I get "Error returned from
evms_commit_changes() : No such device".
I have two ide hard drives -- each is an ide disk in an
external ide<-->sata enclosure, plugged into a pci sata
card. I want hda to be left alone by evms, and hdc to be
managed by evms. hde is an ide dvd-rw drive, which plugs
into the motherboard's integrated ide controller.
find /dev/evms shows:

So, even though through evmsn I can "Save", there's actually
a problem that evmsn isn't telling me about.
