Hm, the latest kernel released is 2.6.5-7.155.29, so the .172 most likely is a 
test kernel. There is a beta snapshot of the SP2 kernel from Hubert Mantel's 
kernel-of-the-day ftp directory, but I am a little reluctant to put it on a 
production system. I think I will try it anyway and report success or failure 
here...

I don't know which patches and additions to the vanilla kernel other parts of 
the SLES distribution depend on, but if nothing else helps, I might try a 
vanilla kernel.
