You need to make sure that the initrd contains your Linux driver, plus scripts to load the module(s), issue DHCP requests, mount the root filesystem etc. Doing this all by hand is extremely non-trivial, but fortunately large numbers of prepackaged solutions such as LTSP exist to help you out.
