I recently found a great source of EPROMS (and a few EEPROMS as well). One of my local electronics stores has a table in the parking lot with "junk" they are selling cheap. On a recent visit I found lots of old PC boards for $1.00 each. Special favorites are old ISA graphics cards that have 2 EPROMS (usually 27256 and/or 27128). Modem cards were a nice source of EEPROMS in a few cases. Watch out for plastic case OTP (One time programmable) 27256 and 27128 parts, they are useless. (although I have heard of people using X-rays to erase these, my advice is to throw them away). With practice it is easy to tell the plastic (useless) case jobs from the ceramic ones by looking at the edge of the chip, but if you aren't sure, peel back the label and verify that it has a quartz window. I pry them out of the sockets, scrape the labels with a razor blade, clean the gunk off with acetone, and erase them with a UV light. Then they are as good as new and ready to program. Tom |
