truncates beginning of sentence on command line invocation

The first word or two of a sentence is routinely truncated from playback when invoking espeak from the command line (and passing the text to render as an argument).

I'm using espeak (tried with version 1.48.03 and 1.46.02-2) on a RaspberryPi B+ running Raspian wheezy 7.8.

It's almost as if audio system initialization is not yet finished when espeak starts it's playback. The problem sometimes goes away on 1 out of about 5 tries, but always returns on subsequent tries. The amount of truncation varies.

Here's the tiny python program I'm using:

The problem also occurs when I just invoke espeak directly from the command line.

$ espeak "Hello there"

While not a total solution, is there some way to make espeak pause at the beginning of the sentence to allow the system to stabilize?

(In case it matters, this problem seems to happen less often when reading text from a disk file, instead of the command line.)

Any other ideas?
