For reasons I can't recall, EpiDoc does not include tables in its ODD. Possibly because we were worried people would use them for formatting...But tables (or things I would argue are semantically tables) do occur in papyri and inscriptions. Accounts and things like that are formatted in a tabular way and I think are in fact tables. Any chance we could put them in and simply warn users that it is an error to use them to format columns?
This question was discussed on the Markup list last year, and it looks from the thread there (final post including history) that consensus was to go ahead and allow (
<table>,<row>,<cell>) in the EpiDoc schema.(NB that was with the justification of using tables in commentary/front matter, not in the edition itself, but I doubt anyone was proposing to write schematron to prevent these elements appearing in
<div type="edition">…Implemented in revision 2776
