While the editorial correction of scribal error comes with a complete toolkit of
1, <sic> to flag an error without correction;
2, <choice> with <sic> and <corr> to correct an error;
3, <surplus> to suppress an erroneous character; and
4, <supplied reason="omitted"> to correct an erroneous omission,
for non-standard usage, we only have
1, <orig> to flag without normalisation, and
2, <choice> with <orig> and <reg> to normalise.
It would be desirable to settle on markup to handle cases 3 and 4 in normalisation in a way similar to how it is done in correction.
Possibly,
for 3, in the Guidelines, suggest <surplus reason="nonstandard"> as a tag for characters suppressed for normalisation;
for 4, in the schema, allow "nonstandard" as a value of @reason with <supplied> and suggest this in the Guidelines.
