From a cold start, I've just been trialling v4.3/31 and v5 with mixed results. I'm now homing in on using v5 but, whilst I can output XMLTV reliably, I get null object reference failures wit WMC output enabled.
Interestingly, this only seems to trigger on some feeds. So far, the null exceptions haven't occurred with only XMLTV output enabled but consistently seems to occur with WMC output enabled - conditional on which feeds are being collected!
I understand v5 has been reworked to eliminate some MS code dependencies (runtimes?). I was wondering whether you're up to throwing up a zip of where you're at with it as I'd like to volunteer to help out and see if I can spot the problem.

V5 does not use the C++ runtime. There is code included in the dev directory that enables DirectShow components to be used by C# code rather than C++.
