ATTENTION The Era of Mages team has currently frozen development. Unfortunately our current team is too small to realize Era of Mages. Therefore we are now forced to ask for more developers to join our efforts in creating a great open-source game. There are already big parts of code written. We have a complete design document and a first draft of the user manual as well as a functional server. The client is pretty far as well allowing players to move units around on the map and cast spells. But still there's ways more to do. If you're interested in joining our team please take a look at the current documents and screenshots available on http://eom.sourceforge.net , then reply to this list. Thanks. Hello to all, We've decided to fully switch EoM to OpenGL now. Although this introduces PyOpenGL as a new dependency it's giving us a lot more to work with. Those of you who checked out the CVS version already realized how slow the software renderer is. The OpenGL renderer will be *a lot* faster. The first plan was to keep both the software and the OpenGL renderer in the project, but seeing the first very successful results from the OpenGL renderer and thinking about the future possibilites (think of animations) brought up the decision to screw the software renderer in favor of the better OpenGL renderer. So stay tuned for the OpenGL renderer hitting the CVS (or actually it'd be better not to stay tuned as I got some nasty exams ahead and it might take a while until I can update the OpenGL renderer to the current state of the software renderer) Finally note that the use of OpenGL does not imply that EoM is now 3D. PS: If you feel like implementing a software renderer please do so. The current (not yet commited though) architecture of EoM allows for easy switches of renderers. But as we want to get EoM useable the current team will focus on the OpenGL renderer so that we don't have to implement everything twice. for the EoM team, -- Raiser, Frank aka CrashChaos IRC: irc.openprojects.net #pygame "A mathematician is a blind man in a dark room looking for a black cat which isn't there." -- Charles Darwin |

We want to have RPG elements in there but it's mainly an action oriented fun game. So think of the RPG element more in terms of Diablo than Baldur's Gate. > I can jump in wherever you need help, though it'll take me a while to get up to speed, and I'll no doubt ask a lot of dumb questions. I've uploaded it to http://eom.sf.net/incoming/eom.tar.gz Please NOTE that this is my current development version here! There is some code in there that isn't commited to cvs yet. Also note that EoM is not yet playable! Simple rule: Don't expect anything from it. Assume it does nothing and be surprised if it actually does something. But don't wonder if it doesn't :) Simple start would be: "python serve.py & ; python client.py" (You must have a server running to "play") If you need anymore help getting it to work let me know. If you find any bugs/crashes in that tarball version you can let me know too.. I'm pretty sure that there will be crashes. Hello all, My name is Chris McCormick. I'm a 27 year-old programmer in the States. I've been programming for a few years, mostly in web stuff (HTML, javascript, ASP, PHP, etc.) I do a good bit of work these days with PHP and databases; you can see my main ongoing project at www.the-athenaeum.org. I play a lot of computer games, and have always been intrigued by them, especially good roleplaying games with a fully-realized world (I'm thinking Fallout, Arcanum, Baldur's Gate, Ultima, etc.). I also love strategy games, especially Blizzard and Westwood's stuff. I've always wanted to learn to program them, but frankly, it's pretty difficult, and as a dad with a full-time job, it's hard to find the time. I've attempted on a couple of occasions to learn C++ and DirectX, but not gotten very far. All of which leads up to Python. I started programming with Python about a year ago, and wrote a small virtual life app using Tkinter. But I got stuck when I tried to convert to a tile-based map, and quit using Python for a while. Now, several months later, I've discovered SDL and PyGame, and I'm very excited again. I'm working on several small projects, and trying to learn everything I can. I'd love to work with you guys on EOM. I can jump in wherever you need help, though it'll take me a while to get up to speed, and I'll no doubt ask a lot of dumb questions. The main obstacle to me right now is that I can't use CVS at work, where I actually do most of my coding (remember the dad thing?). If there was any way you could package a zip file of the directory structure (I use WinME), it would help me tremendously. | hi team | | daylight or nocturnal kind of landscape? Erm, am I missing something here? Can you provide a little more qualification? Are you referring to the in-game terrains, static shots or something else? In general the game is played during "daylight" hours, although it's entirely possible to play with lighting for different elements. For static dialogs, you can use what ever lighting suits your mood I guess...? Dunno if that answers your question as I'm not entirely sure what your asking! :) G |

I more thought of a bar.. not like 'You got 3.1415926 EPs'.. kinda like Diablo so that you the player can see there's about that much missing for the next level.. so when you're close to it (and we update the character in the game) one might run a more risky attack just to get the last few EPs for the next level. I think we need to at least give the player some way of finding it's current character state.. otherwise he'll feel strange and will start worrying about his EPs > My preference (I think) is after the game. But I'm flexible on this issue... Things are never this good! ;-P I'm actually waiting for this to happen.. otoh the list isn't used much anyways.. we got mostly the eom-devel team here.. that's why we need some more users on this list.. and if it's just for disagreeing :) I don't think I'll be able to add an OpenGL renderer to the 0.1 release as I'm currently stuck with a bug no one seems to know. I've tried chakie, pete, #opengl and the pyopengl list without any success so far. So for now I'll stick to make 0.1 more playable (aka update the battle system) -- Raiser, Frank aka CrashChaos IRC: irc.openprojects.net #pygame "Your either part of the problem, part of the solution, or part of the landscape." -Ronin |

| get 2 EP for defeating the enemy by first defeating the castle and after
that
| the easy-to-kill magician.. I can't say I really like the idea}
Hmmm, that's seriously fat granularity for the dispertion of EP. I was
thinking we'd have much finer resolution of it, so you'd get a large chunk
for the destruction of the castle, and a fairly minor (given the fact he
*has* no castle) distribution for the destruction of the mage [in this
example], and maybe some other "pots" of EP for finding secret things, or
performing some minor miracle, or (decent examples escape me atm)...
If it boil's down to "You get an EP for winning the game", it's just going
to be a question of "He who plays the longest gets the EP", which I find a
bit pants and ever so "unrefined"! :-P
Wouldn't it be nicer to have "He who plays the most refined strategy and
gets the most 'goals' in the game gets some fine EP"?

|
| {So you create your character and that strange game wants you to give it
| two names? What kind of RPG is that :).. dunno if players would like
that?}
Why? It's standard. What we have to figure out is the "creative packaging"!
For example: package it up into "Nick name:... , Shorthand: ...", so I'd be
"Korruptor" and "Kor" for example. (I'm sure there are other ways)
That example already gives twice the resoultion, and half as many pissed off
players...
Or...
Some creative packaging of character name and machine name for networked
games, something like ' korruptor@scully ' in my case (springs straight off
the top of my head)... Or a mixture of both. Or something else. Or mix name
and IP, Or... (I'll shut up now)
With any of the above examples you can still do a load of jiggery-pokery in
the background to create a unique name for connection to a server, yet
display the expected name to the user. Shouldn't be a major big deal? Just a
question of packaging IMO...

|
| {How paranoid are the players? The EoM server is certainly not going to
live up
| to something like battle.net of course.. but on bigger LANs (student
houses?)
| there might be a reason for it?}
Student dorms; probably the last place it'll require a password, or at
least, the last place they'll think of requiring one..! ;-) But I see the
point. ATM I'm thinking why bother, but if you can see a need for it in the
future, and it'll be tricky to retrofit later, you might as well stick it in
now. It's not like it's a real big deal...
| {heh.. sure! That question was more like 'did I miss anything in the
manual?' :}
Not that I can think of or see...
| {I still wouldn't know how to properly use it. There is only a certain
small
| amount of possible "spell moves" we could be using (using more would mean
| erroneous spells from time to time) and it's hard to say we're only
applying
| it to certain spells ruling others out. It's also kinda overkilling it
when
| the user can apply spells to mouse movements imho}
I don't agree with any of the points you've made above. Especially with
regard to the amount of spell moves. However, the real argument against it
is one of development time (which I've already conceeded), and the fact that
you don't like it much, so lets forget it! We've already been 'round this
one a couple of times, and agreed to disagree... :0)

I doubt anyone will notice anyway! :-P

Ok, this should probably go to the users list, but I've not subscribed
yet... I also don't know how many of you have read the manual either so...
{so here it is on the user list}
In manual order:
{...}
-- &TODO; Decide whether a destroyed home castle ends the game
I don't actually think it should, purely as I think it'll be funny to see
the panic on a players face when they realise they better leg it, find some
cover and think of some bloody good way to fight back.
I can see the argument for and against tho, however, I think it'll force the
players to stay pretty close to their home castle if it's destruction
immediately ends the game -- this would limit things and make the strategy
more defensive, not really what we want for all elements... [It's pretty
obvious castle destruction will mean the *imminent* end of the game
regardless, so I don't think we need to force the issue...]
One thing that appeals: certain elements could be reliant on their castle,
so therefore it's destruction *could* mean the end of the game for them,
which would lead to some interesting strategy changes amoungst the different
elements. Some being defensive, some being agressive...
For the record tho: I'm opposed to castle destruction being game-over for
all elements...
{comes down to my opinion. I thought of the castle as a big mana resource
that will hurt if you lose it (forcing you to act in some way?). Of course
once a castle falls this pretty much means an enemy will gain most parts
of the map and get the supremacy.. might take *a lot* of efforts to win
the game then}
BTW, castle destruction should also give some *nice* experience benefits to
the player that wiped it off the map...
{hm.. this seems to have a more serious impact as it would mean a player will
get 2 EP for defeating the enemy by first defeating the castle and after that
the easy-to-kill magician.. I can't say I really like the idea}

-- &TODO; more options?
Probably, but we don't need to worry about that for a while...
-- &TODO; more controls?
Erm, I'll stick my neck out here and say "NO!" (as a point of principal,
nothing more)
The challenge is to provide the functionality we want in as few controls as
possible. Keep it simple, *please* don't make it one of those "400 control"
type games -- it doesn't provide any massive improvement to the game
experience, and it's a right pain in the arse for beginners. Advanced
controls shouldn't really provide a massive advantage to more experienced
players either... Keep it balanced, keep it simple, and make it fluid...
That's what being a game designer is all about isn't it?! :-P
{heh.. sure! That question was more like 'did I miss anything in the manual?' :}
-- &TODO; Decide on common commands
Indeed. That's a separate discussion altogether tho... We'll need to hit
these one at a time.
-- &TODO; More options for buildings?
Depends on the building, and even then I think it'll be an "Advanced"
building thing, and not something that's generic across all buildings...
Depends what we design/come up with I guess, so the discussion is a bit moot
at this point...
-- &TODO; mouse movement controlled spells?
I want it, (I'd love it!) but I appreciate the difficulty in implementation.
It does solve all our control problems tho. There's massive scope for use of
the expressive interface, however, I seriously doubt we'll ever get this
done, so we'll need to think about the traditional interfaces pretty hard.
{I still wouldn't know how to properly use it. There is only a certain small
amount of possible "spell moves" we could be using (using more would mean
erroneous spells from time to time) and it's hard to say we're only applying

Hello, First I want to excuse for this looking like sp4m. It isn't though :) The Era of Mages project is coming along quite well and now the developers agreed to have the details of the design worked out by discussing them with the actual users (aka gamerz). A discussion list was therefore implemented which you can get additional information about on: http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/eom-users The overall project (for those who don't know it yet) can be found at: http://eom.sourceforge.net The reason for this call-to-arms is simply that we developers don't have enough time to discuss the design details as well as the more technical implications of it. We also want to enable the players to tell us their ideas and wishes so that we can create a better product for them. We've been working on the Era of Mages user manual lately which is available for download at: http://eom.sf.net/manual.pdf (draft version only). It is supposed to serve as a ground for discussions on the userlist. So if you want to participate in forming a game please read the existing manual first and then join the eom-users list. We're not talking about creating/discussing a full game concept here! As you will see from the manual the overall design for Era of Mages is already fixed and we will not discuss whether this is good or bad (afterall those are the ideas for a great game that got the project started initially). To give you a more precise idea of what the discussion list is about here are some sample questions that will be decided on the eom-users list: * What kind of spells will be available to the players? * What kind of enemies? * What controls should be added? * and much more For the Era of Mages team, -- Raiser, Frank aka CrashChaos IRC: irc.openprojects.net #pygame "Only wimps use tape backup: _real_ men just upload their important stuff on ftp, and let the rest of the world mirror it ;)" -- Linus Torvalds |

Welcome to the eom-users list. Please bear with us for a while as the list just got started and therefore isn't used much. We're currently working on the user manual for Era of Mages so that everyone can get some insights on how the game's going to be. I'll let the list know when the manual is available. New decisions made from the discussions in this list will then be updated in the manual (especially the decisions about new units/buildings/spells/etc). -- Raiser, Frank aka CrashChaos IRC: irc.openprojects.net #pygame "Walk a mile on these paws and call me a liar." -- Gaspode the wonder dog (Terry Pratchett, Moving Pictures) |
