never manually edit the configure files or the created Makefiles, only
pass options to them. Look at the output of ./configure --help.

Again, manually editing stuff won't get you far. Something went wrong
during generation of the Makefiles, you're using what's supposed to be a
Makefile.in as a Makefile. Remove all Makefiles (those without any
suffixes) and the configure script, and re-run autogen.sh.
