I just run into a usability problem.

I got the policy to encrypt more sensitive mails with PGP and less sensitive with S/MIME. (I didn't came up with that idea)

So I selected PGP for a mail to a college. Unfortunatly he's one of the few who doesn't even has a PGP key - only S/MIME. So in the end by selecting S/MIME I send him a completly unencrypted mail without noticing it (didn't look at the encryption button again).

For such a scenario, Enigmail could explicitly warn the user that a possibility to encrypt is not being used because of the settings the user made manually.

I don't understand the idea behind your policy. Nonetheless, as long as you don't actively select an encryption standard, Enigmail will automatically try to choose a suitable algorithm. You can define that you prefer OpenPGP over S/MIME or vice versa.

    But honestly, I won't create a dialog for such a corner-case.
