I've done something similar, but used #100 & up, for probing locations and 
tool lengths for pcb etching.  Seems to work well for me.  I might revisit 
it and use named vars at some point.  I didn't expect them to live past a 
gcode reload of a different file that uses the same variable name but they 
do.

Some folks might consider that to be a security issue, but its been handy 
several times.
