Ok.  Please let me know when it is committed (and where -- if it not in the
emc-trunk), so I can try to contribute.

Sure thing (as long as it is OK with him).  Until Alex got back to me with
this I almost called the professors in Italy (actually their email addresses
are broken on their departmental web pages, but that is another issue)...
