A few days ago I've been oversighting openlms, leaded by Lofi message about elearning specs. First I visited openlms.sourceforge.net that It's not the project referenced by Lofi, but I've sawn they're looking for partners in the context of an european program for funding learning initiatives.

Well, proposal,...why not join and look for european or other public funding?
I manage a small spanish commercial company focused on e-learning consulting and ASP e-learning services based on opensource products
(http://www.argonauta.org/formacion). We offer too, courses on international conflicts analysis
    (http://www.argonauta.org/aula/conflihome.htm,
    http://www.argonauta.org/aula2/reconshome.htm\).

We are very interested in having an e-learning platform with a multitier architecture and  with standards support, but have no founds as to invest in this kind of work and until now I have
been doing voluntary work for this sourceforge project.

We have though a couple of times in obtaininig european public funding in the context of an opensource project but until know we have no european partners an we are discouraged because of the administrative weight of an european project, but maybe know :-).....

We are offering our international conflict courses under the umbrella of
two spanish academical partners from Universidad Complutense de Madrid
that maybe we can convince to participate.....
    what do you think?

      The address: http://www.openlms.org

Yes, the problem with european project is that it is too complicated ;-) If someone wants to care of it, no problem ;-)

At the moment (already past) we are in the process of having a Network of Excellence with CampusSource: http://www.campussource.org

      If you have any ideas?

      Lofi.

We are closing a meeting with local coordinators of Eurolearn/EUREKA in order to talk about the project.

    • Robert D. Zeigler

Rich, how did your meeting with Eurolearn go?

    • Richard C. Hidalgo Lorite

Sorry, i've been really busy last week.
We met local representatives of eureka (http://www.eureka.be) for e-learning projects (named eurolearn eureka umbrella).
While CDTI is the real eureka representative for spain, they use overlap (www.overlap.net) as e-learning field specific representatives.
They have found innovative the project line we have presented to them, that it's a MUST requisite in order to be accepted for eureka (i'm going to send u what innovative lines we have presented to overlap) and they are going to help us in apply for getting eureka approval.
The thing is that we are not solid form a financial point of view, we are few and our firm is young, then we have to found a entity from europe with that profile in order to be the project head (maybe an academical entity, we are thinking in an NGO,...)
We can add partners from latin america and apply for a Iberoeka instead of eureka.

Well, next step is finding that european solid partner agreeing with being the project head and send to overlap the eureka form at www.eureka.be

      Any idea?

      We can talk more later.....

More about Eurolearn - They're going to met with international partners monday and they have call us for writting a short paper about the project and the kind of partner that we need. I transcript it.
P.D: Sorry Robert for not being answering I have been out resting for nine days. Monday I pay attention to your questions.

      MEDEA Project Description
MEDEA project goal is to develop an open source comprehensive framework for non presential learning in wide geographic area environments. MEDEA uses wide addopted protocols and telecommunications networks, especially Internet, as base infrastructure for this purpose.

      Some MEDEA components are:

Secretary (Learning Catalog and Secure Enrollment)
      Message Service
      Assessment Planner/Distributor.
      Learning Content Planner/Distributor
      Digital Library
      Upload/Download Manager

Most innovative features of MEDEA are:

-Open Source Code under GPL license.
A trend is growing in Europe about considering Open Source Software as a very important bet for acquiring economical and technological independence from USA. Open Software harmonizes well too with the very best european cultural values of individual human wrights protection, wellfare, political correctness concept, fight against technological, economical an cultural trusts (see Ref 1).

On the other hand, some important Open Source Software initiatives for education has been approved and developed by regional public authority at several spanish regions like Andaluca and Extremadura, and they are considering how to export that experiences to other regions.

There are too, important institutional recognition of open source value by Latin American governments like Brasil and Venezuela.

We have been convinced by all this experiences and our own enterprise path that this model is capable of generating economic, social and cultural goods and probably this kind of projects are showing the future path of public interest software. Then, we present MEDEA as Open Source Software licensed under Global Public License (see ref. 2)

-Multiaccess, from access device viewpoint (Web,iPod,Mobil,...)and from channel quality viewpoint (Well developed Telco Infraestructures or Poor Ones).

MEDEA has to split bussiness logic from presentation logic in order to serve same bussiness logic (the learning logic) to different presentation devices like World Wide Web, Mobil, Digital TV. We are going to use multitier arquitecture under Model-View-Controller design pattern in order to facilitate this kind of functions and widely improve flexibility and mantainability of code.

Also, MEDEA has to break telco infraestructures barriers by allowing access from points where telephony and internet infraestructures are poor developed (like rural areas in Europe or Latin America) (see ref. 3).

      -Reusable and Component Based Software.

MEDEA is not a conventional e-learning platform. It has been born with intend of being a vertical e-learning framework to be used by all vertical applications in e-learning domain that wants to do so.

Then, we are going to use Object Oriented Technologies and languages with design according to well defined patterns (see Ref. 4) and functional tier splitting in bussiness logic, data logic and presentation logic to greater facilitate the outlined requirements.

What kind of partner do we look for?

ISI Argonauta is the project author and has demonstrable experience and know-how to coordinate and execute this project. Until know we have invested human resources in previous international projects (see ref. 5) and preliminary research to make possible the conception of this project
We have technological and academical contacts in Europe and Latin America, but we have no investor interested in MEDEA execution. We cannot afford that inversion from our structure.
Then, we need an "investor" or "contractor" partner that contract ISI Argonauta for executing MEDEA. We can write down the project for Eurolearn evaluation and we understand that getting the approval from Eurolearn, that "investor" partner could benefit of their country financial lines to get necessary cash to contract ISI Argonauta and other partners as needed.
If necessary, ISI Argonauta could finance a little by paying part of our development fees.

        Hi Richard,

looks interesting! Do you need a "big" partner? If yes I can contact CampusSource for this. Also, OpenUSS has a big partner in Mexico. Just tell me, how can I help you specifically?

        Thanx,
        Lofi.

    • Richard C. Hidalgo Lorite

Could you tell me a little more about OpenUSS and Mexican Partner and the role that you think they can play? are they the 'kind' of partner that i outlined at  the end of my last message?

My wife is now at Mexico until 5th October and she can contact Mexican Partner if necessary.

      Thanks Lofi

      rich

The University of Pedagogy National Mexico (http://www.upn.mx) is developing OpenUSS with us together.

I did not really understand, what kind of partners do you search for (as you mentioned it in the last mail). Could you ellaborate this?

        Anyway you can contact:

        Ricardo Beltrn L.
        pks@linux.ajusco.upn.mx

directly to ask, whether there is any collaboration chances...

        Regards,
        Lofi.

We need a partner that funds our project, maybe partner is not the wright word, but Investor or investors.
If we conceive a project that gains Eureka consideration, that project could benefit from national r&d funding lines.

      Imagine this scenario:

We conceive the project, get preliminary contacts and agreements with technological and academical partners that we consider necessary to develop it (For example Eledge Team,OpenUSS Team, UPN, ISI,...)

We all look you to public and private funding sources in our countries that an EUREKA project is suitable to apply for.

This is what I'm willing you to advise, funding sources that we can found.

Hope I have been clearer :-)

        ----------------------------------------------
        Press Release
        ----------------------------------------------
For all JOnAS and Enhydra users/developers:

We are proud to announce the final release of EJOSA Template 1.3.5.
New features, bug fixes, new documentation are now available!

EJOSA - Enterprise Java Open Source Architectur =
Enhydra (5.0) and JOnAS (3.1) Application
        http://ejosa.sourceforge.net

EJOSA is a project supporting an effective development of J2EE-based applications. The template model provides a collection of many Open Source components available such as Enhydra and JOnAS. Please
read the documentation for more information!

        General:
        - Documentation about EJOSA Template for Users HOW-TO. Thanks to
          Miroslav Halas and Torsten Menzel.
        - Integration of Enhydra as Service in JOnAS. Now you can just start
JOnAS, and Enhydra will be started automatically as a service
          "enhydra" within JOnAS.
        - JOnAS Alarm example with Jetty is now added into EJOSA and it uses
the EJOSA Template structure. JOnAS is also configured to use Jetty
          now.
        - AspectJ simple example is included within dev-piggybank-ejb-hibernate.
The presentation layer (Swing and Enhydra) aspects work nicely.
The business layer (JOnAS) aspects don't work yet, need a rework.
        - There are some additions in ext-libs, so you have to download it again
or just simple download the whole package.

        Structure:
        - New directory "application" to build all the specification, business
          and presentation together.
        - Directory "classes/Generated Sources" is renamed under
"src-generated". This has to be done because Eclipse cannot
go well with "classes/Generated Sources" structure. Thanks
to Arne Sutor for this (Savus project). EJOSA Template works
now in Eclipse 3.x. You cannot use Eclipse 2.x because it cannot
start more than one Ant session.
        - All jonas-start.xml is reworked to use JOnAS classloader.
Thanks to Ingo Dueppe for this (Savus project).

        Download:
        1)EJOSA Template 1.3.5 Documentation PDF:
        http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/ejosa/ejosa1.3.5-doc.pdf?download

        2)EJOSA Template 1.3.5 Complete (with ext-libs)
There are some updates into 1.3.5 ext-libs, so please re-download
        this ext-libs:
        http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/ejosa/ejosa1.3.5-complete.zip?download

        3)EJOSA Template 1.3.5 without ext-libs:
        http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/ejosa/ejosa1.3.5-wthout-ext-libs.zip?download

        4)EJOSA Template 1.3.5 only the ext-libs:
        http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/ejosa/ejosa1.3.5-ext-libs.zip?download

Please read the documentation to compile all the examples!

OpenUSS (http://openuss.sourceforge.net) will follow and use this
EJOSA Template 1.3.5 as its foundation.

        Have a lot of fun!
