European group to test global ebXML interoperability

In June 2004, a European standards group will hold a global
interoperability event that plugs a gap in ebXML's testing scheme.

The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), based in the
south of France, will hold an international interoperability event for
ebXML in late June 2004. This ETSI Plugfest, as they like to call these
sessions, will be the first exercise to test ebXML interoperability
across geographic regions.

ETSI will hold its ebXML Plugfest on 21-25 June at its facilities in
Sophia-Antipolis, France. According to ETSI, its plugfests last a few
days and are purely engineering sessions; and not recommended for
marketing people. The sessions are open to any developers and provide a
venue for developers to work out implementation issues that can hamper
their products or services working with others that support the
standards in question.

Tests to cover ebXML Messaging, CPAs
The ETSI interoperability tests will cover ebXML Message Service or ebMS
functions that follow the Basic Interoperability Profile (BIP) for ebMS.
The OASIS/ebXML Implementation, Interoperability and Conformance
Technical Committee or IIC prepared the profile. The BIP includes the
use of ebXML Collaboration Protocol Agreements (CPAs) to define run-time
configurations for ebXML message handlers.

Korbit -- the Korean business-to-business interoperability testbed --
has offered to host remote conformance tests for Plugfest participants
in advance of the event. ETSI recommends running these conformance tests
for three months before taking part in the Plugfests.

Besides the OASIS IIC, and Korbit, the European standards groups CEN/ISS
and EAN, ebXML Asia and the Dutch developer TIE are sponsoring the
plugfest. The global nature of the event will help fill a gap in ebXML's
testing. Previous interoperability tests have been confined to regional
groups in Europe, Asia, and North America. The ETSI Plugfest will enable
developers from anywhere to test for interoperability across regions.

ETSI has more information available on its Web site with registration
open to 31 May 2004.
