about 20 minutes after posting I tried RunMonitor.sh and it was very handy
indeed.

unfortunately I know get an error when attempting to send MIME messages to
the hermes MSH (from my perl code) - I will write a proper post on the
problem once I have had a little longer to check my own code isn't at
fault.
