Fm: Seabird Marine Services. Egypt. Ref: About the Suez Canal The Suez Canal is considered to be the shortest link between the east and the west due to its unique geographic location; it is an important international navigation canal linking between the Mediterranean Sea at Port Said and the red sea at Suez. It is an artificial waterway running north to south across the Isthmus of Suez in northeastern Egypt; it connects the Mediterranean Sea with the Gulf of Suez, an arm of the Red Sea. The canal, about 163 km (about 101 miles) long, has no locks because the Mediterranean Sea and the Gulf of Suez have roughly the same water level. It takes between 12 and 16 hours for ships to transit the Canal, and approx 76 ships transit the canal on a daily basis. The Suez Canal's strategic importance lies in the fact that it is essential for world trade. It transports 14% of the total world trade, 26% of oil exports, 41% of the total volume of goods and cargo that reach Arab Gulf ports. In January 1998, the Egyptian government abolished its monopoly on ship agency services in Egypt and private companies were permitted to act as port agents at Egyptian ports, including the Suez Canal. SeaBird was the first shipping agency to respond to this decree and was granted its agency licence in June 1998 and independently deposited the required bank guarantee of one million US dollars to the Suez Canal Authority (SCA). Since then, SeaBird has been able to attend directly to vessels of any size transiting the Suez Canal. The Suez Canal Transit (SCT) Services are coordinated from Seabird Egypt's Head Office in Cairo and supported through its Wide Area Network (WAN) offices at Port Said, Suez & Cairo Airport. Statistics from the Suez Canal Authority show that in the first 10 months of 2008, the canal brought in $4.57bn and transported 844.4m tons of cargo.
