You may try to call

Request.reportEnvironment();
Request.checkDatabase();
Request.checkPersistence();

which will give back to you a XML document reporting the internal status 
of Hermes. Please note that it is no document on this.. so you may need 
to trace into the source code to see the correct behaviour. ;-)
