#36 EasyABC 1.3.7.7 for Mac - Help! I don't know how to build this

I downloaded EasyABC 1.3.7.7 for Mac, not realising that it wouldn't install in a nice easy way like it does on a Windows OS. Instead I finished up with a zip folder filled with the source code: a set of files that I have no clue how to put together to form the software I need. The previous version of EasyABC is now corrupt.

Is there someone who could do 'hand holding' to help me put this stuff together please?

Your reward: a very happy ABC notation operator.

      Thank you.

Will that work with Catalina 10.15.7?

Yes, this works (at least on my Mac with 10.15.7). This build was created specifically for the headaches that Catalina can give to older programs.
        Cheers

If your mac can play midi files using either TiMidity or fluidsynth, you can configure EasyAbc to call one of these applications to play the file. Go to Settings/ Abc settings/ File Settings and specify the path to the midiplayer and the soundfont file to load.

These are listed and when I try to use any of them for playback in the
midi2abc executable option in the settings I get the error message:
      Unable to load /Users/kathy/Library/Application
      Support/EasyABC/cache/tempbcf1e737-1390-45e9-b693-464ec58452a5.midi:
      Unsupported format?

      abc2abc
      abc2midi
      abcm2ps
      midi2abc
      nwc2xml

The last one doesn't seem at all relevant in this scenario.

We have VLC player, Quicktime player and a thing called Soundflowerbed
(no idea what the latter is). Can't see the programs you mention.

    Hi,
For information, I've made some modification that should solve most of the main issue on macOS Catalina, source code is currently available on github here: https://github.com/aupfred/EasyABC/tree/playback-mac-mplay

I've build a package which is present currently only on my Drive here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1mnXH6DD_PYFSrjyLvFpJ_m0ZA90qgmaG/view?usp=sharing
    First feedback seems fine

For Playback midi file you do not need to use any external software, it uses the built-in synthesiser of macOS, allowing to have progress slider updated and tempo change while playing

    Sincerely,

    Frédéric

Frédéric, thank you for your efforts, but playback does not work on my M1 Macbook Air running OS 11.4. When I click on "midi settings" nothing happens. I can export to a midi file, which plays back in VLC. I am glad to have the ABC-entry features, however. (I also have a local version of ABC with Shape Notes ( http://projectnotions.com/abc2shapenote/abc2sn.html ) on my machine which I believe is html 5-based and it plays ABC files I create, but ABC entry in that "program" is very rudimentary). So I'm using your version of EasyABC to generate the sheet music and abc.txt file and pasting the text into ABC with Shape Notes. I'm not very tecchie, but I'm attaching a screenshot of the .js libraries that ABC with Shape Notes uses.

EDIT: It works! :D but there is a bug. I had EasyABC open with a not-very-wide window size (see image) that didn't show the "playback position" slider. Once I widened the window so that the playback position slider was revealed, playback worked. Thank you so much.

      Hi,
Thanks for the feedback. I do not have an M1 Mac so cannot test on it. Good to know that it is working.

        Hi again,
I was using version 1.3.7.9 (according to the .plist file in the app package)
The bug is not that big a deal, but b/c I'm using a small laptop, I often have not-very-wide windows. For now, just warning people that the window might need to be wide enough to show the playback position slider should be enough.
        Thanks again for your efforts.Karen
