is there any chance of getting a run down on what advanced
settings do what?

For instance, if I put a check mark in "4 motion vectors per
macroblock" in Advanced Video A, what would happen?

Here's what I've been putting check marks on:
all defaults for 1.8.4
advanced audio-
-variable bitrate
-audio preload buffer 0.5

advanced video A
-post process deblocking

advanced video C
-high quality encoding

and in the proper crop and i'm pretty happy with how things turn
out.
