Summary: re-implement the reduced model

Initial Comment:
The reduced model code is not just ugly; it has been 
causing real problems for improved indentation, as 
well as the display of line number information. I 
suggest we throw away the old code and rebuild the 
whole thing, starting with a new look at design. 
Specifically, the interface should be re-designed to 
allow the new clients to access relevant information 
more easily.
