Brian, I have the same problem, everything seems to be falling back to something very slow. At first I didn't have the tdfx_dri.so module installed and so GL was reported as "Indirect" and with LIBGL_DEBUG setenved I got the error that I was missing the module. I installed the module and now get no errors wih LIBGL_DEBUG. GL is now reported correctly as "DRI" but things seem even slower that with the "Indirect" rendering. Hope that helps somewhat. I've tested with both quake3 and the xscreensaver GL modules.
