I did not have a second machine set up for this testing. I tried CTRL-ALT-1
but did not get a VT. Also, IIRC, the CAPS LOCK key would not toggle
the indicator LED.

I get one of these messages each time I start a GL screensaver:
"trying to get vblank count for disabled pipe 0"
However, X is not locking up on me as far as I can see.
One possibility is that the display stops working after my
display is put to sleep. I am running Ubuntu 8.04 and have
my display set to sleep after 30 minutes of inactivity.
Perhaps putting the display to sleep is what triggered the
"trying to get vblank count for disabled pipe 1" message.
I am using:
compiz 1:0.7.4-0ubuntu6 OpenGL window and compositing manager
compiz-gnome 1:0.7.4-0ubuntu6
