I have a couple of systems here on the same box. There is a rather vitriolic discussion about this bug http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4197 which talks about losing speed. I want to report results. Each system had similar Xorg-6.9.0 installations & config file. The box: xorg-6.9.0, on an athlon-2.6ghz (333 mhz fsb) and agp 4x. Radeon 7000 agp card. X running, & very little else. System 1: Standard Linuxfromscratch (v 5.0). Glxgears reports ~616 fps w/low cpu usage. Cover the gears, and the cpu usage skyrockets, and frame rate also. System 2: Hardened system (www.linucfroimscratch.org/hlfs glibc based also. I would expect approximately a 5% speed penalty from hardening code, and others would expect a penalty from the bug 4197 patch which is applied to libGL.so.1.2 and percolated down (e.g. all programs are linked against a textrel free libGL.so.1.2. I nevertheless get 618 fps from glxgears :-o. The only difference is that the hardened system has fewer daemons running. Is that tops from a radeon 7000? I don't care, I'm no gamer, but I am told it might be faster. Stellarium looks cool. The google search "glxgears bad benchmark" throws up thousands of hits. What's a GOOD benchmark? -- With best Regards, Declan Moriarty. |
