The permission problem is weird. The Xserver should always have the
necessary permissions. Could be an ABI issue. Are you running this on a
64-bit OS? If so, is the Xserver 32-bit or 64-bit. The best advice I
have is to try again with the latest versions of everything. If it
doesn't work file a bug report at bugs.freedesktop.org.
