The problem ended up being that the new XFre86 binary installed from the 'extras' package I downloaded from dri.sourceforge.net was not 'suid root'. It took me a while to figure that one out! I'm not sure if was supposed to know this or not, but it's not in the install instructions, so maybe the 'extra' package has the permissions set wrong, or maybe I did something wrong, or maybe this is a FAQ that I was unaware of.
