this is *most* curious... i mean, this is a real winner... i don't even know where to start. ready? i installed debian, mandrake, and redhat. debian + redhat both use a slightly older built-in 2.4.18 kernel while mandrake of course uses a nice cutting edge 2.4.21. x with 3d works on debian and mandrake... x 4.2 on debian and redhat, 4.3 on mandrake. but *doesn'* work for redhat. here's the fun part... i compile a new 2.4.21 w/dri and the appropriate radeon module in the kernel to test on each distro... 3d for debian works weird now, nothing for mandrake, but works like a charm under redhat. in fact, blazing fast in redhat.. faster framerates per second than under windows. i've read so much documentation, my eyeballs are melting in their sockets - for the life of me, i can't understand why x seems to be working so backwards all of the sudden. any ideas, comments... please. i'm just trying to put the pieces together. would it be wise to build a new x? i have nothing against compiling... because i think the 'stock' stuff doesn't quite get the job done. thanks list later |
