Hello! I've noticed a few more quirks with the Radeon/ATi driver. On my previous boot to Linux, I was able to launch X, perform some tasks and exit back to the console with no problem. The console was not corrupted. Attempting to restart X, the system hardlocked and I rebooted. Five reboots in all, and not one of them would bring up XFree again. In frustration, I shut the machine down and left it off for about a half hour or so. When I powered it back up, I booted to Win98 first, launched a DirectX screensaver, and immediately rebooted back to Linux. XFree launched perfectly after this, and I've been running this session since. (Current up time is 24hrs, which is pretty good IMO. I was never able to keep previous sessions running as long.) I have been able to install and launch both Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament and play them. Switching resolutions inside the game(s) worked perfectly. I'm not sure if it'll help at all, but you'll find my current XF86Config-4 file along with a log of XFree and dmesg. I'm going to do a little more testing to see if just powering the machine off is what's helping, or if by some account, booting in to Windows is doing it. Need to take out some fstab entries first (takes too long to check the four in there.) My day job involves supporting WIndows products. I'm really anxious to NOT use Windows at home. As such, I'm willing to subject my computer to any number of bizarre experiments if it'll help out at all. :) Thanks, Steve |
