Hmm. . .try rmmod'ing the agpgart module as well as the radeon module after you exit X and then see if the problem persists upon restart. I found that if something goes horribly wrong on the kernel side one of two things happen: * The system encounters a hard lock * or the kernel modules refuse to be removed I'm not an expert and I don't know why (however I do have a lot of trial-and-error experience :)).
