Make sure you can boot a stock 2.4.20 kernel without the dprobes patch first. I'm wondering if you may also need to create an initial ram disk as well. Try starting with the config file that came with your distro, or the last working kernel you had. You can dump the .config into your 2.4.20 directory and do a "make oldconfig".
